PARENTS
Coaches + Players + Parents = SUCCESS.

FORMS

It is a seemingly simple formula, but the reality is that all too often in high school athletics, the relationships between coaches, players, and parents break down, leading to hard feelings, disappointment, and regret all around.

The best way to avoid this unfortunate result is for all parties to understand what their role is, embrace it to the fullest extent, and execute it to the best of their abilities.  Below is a brief outline of what our expectations are for all three groups.

COACHES

Quite obviously the role of the coaching staff is to be the leaders of the football team.  Within that are certain expectations:

1.
Coaches will take every precaution to ensure the safety of your sons.  This means that we will teach sound fundamentals at practice (blocking and tackling will be major points of emphasis), we will ensure that the matchups in practice are fair (equal size and ability), and we will work hard to put them in positions to be successful on game day.
2.
Coaches will serve as mentors to your sons.  An essential component of the philosophy of our program is that football is a vehicle for teaching young men lessons in life, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
3.
Coaches will choose the offensive, defensive, and special teams schemes.
4.
Coaches will determine playing time by constantly evaluating our players performance on the practice field.  These decisions are often difficult to make, and there are many variables that go into them.  At the end of the day, however, the overriding principle is “the team, the team, the team.”

PLAYERS
1.
Embrace the program values of TOUGHNESS, DISCIPLINE, and SELFLESSNESS.  If you fully commit your heart and mind to this, everything below will be easy.
2.
Commit to the team.  This means that you will attend all team meetings, practices, and functions throughout the course of the season without exception.  You need to MAKE THE TIME to be at practice - acceptable reasons for missing practice include (illness, absent from school).  Please note it is unacceptable to miss practice for ANY OTHER REASON!!!
3.
Commit to finishing what you started.  Quitting is not acceptable.  Once you have committed yourself to our values and our team, it is an expectation that you will finish the season, regardless of ANY variables.
4.
Be a great teammate.  This means supporting your friends and teammates at all times, good or bad.
5.
PLAY HARD!  Give all you have when we are in practices and games!
6.
COMMUNICATE!  It is vital that you communicate with coaches concerning absences from school/practice for ANY REASON!!!

PARENTS
1.
SUPPORT THE TEAM.  There are many ways to do this: volunteer to help the LI Athletic boosters, contact Coach Nolan and volunteer to help the program, attend all games and be positive, and finally, be your son’s biggest fan!
2.
Remember that LESS IS OFTEN MORE.  You are the most important figure in your son’s life, and your words have incredible significance for him.  On the football field, however, you must take a backseat to the coaching staff.  They are the ones who have spent years acquiring knowledge of the game, have played it for many years themselves, are with your son every day for two hours on the field, and who are ultimately committed to teaching your son how to be a good man.  Please support us in our efforts to educate your son.  If your son receives conflicting messages at home from what he is getting at practice, success is difficult to attain.
3.
REWARD EFFORT!  After the game is over, your son does not want your evaluation of his performance.  His coaches are responsible for that.  You should simply refer to his effort...”I thought you played really hard.”  If they want to talk about the game, go ahead.  However, it is critical that you focus on effort, not performance.
